Spatial maps are a good way to visualize and analyze market, demographic, or real estate data, for example. Snapshots of our interactive wind energy map show how a combination of commercial wind farm data with wind resource maps can be used to evaluate market opportunities or make energy policy decisions.

A heatmap is a tool to visualize a large amount of data and highlight trends. Heatmaps can be found in various fields, such as financial services, marketing and biotechnology. This example shows a very simple heatmap constructed in Excel that highlights quantitative selection criteria of the S&P 500 stocks. A portfolio manager can use a heatmap like this to perform a stock screen or quickly assess the status of a portfolio.

More sophisticated heatmaps contain multi-hierarchical groupings, such as by industry sector and sub-industry and also have drilldown capabilities. They are designed with special software, such as Heatmap Explorer from Labescape.
